Election Key Register
Full Form of EKR
What is EKR?
The Election Key Register (EKR) is a secure digital or physical ledger maintained by the Election Commission of India (ECI) to record and manage cryptographic keys used in electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter-verified paper audit trails (VVPATs). Each EVM and VVPAT is assigned unique encryption keys that ensure the integrity and confidentiality of vote data during transmission and storage. The EKR logs key generation, distribution, usage, and destruction, providing a tamper-evident audit trail. It is updated before every general election, by-election, and state assembly poll, and is accessed only by authorised ECI officials under strict supervision. The register helps prevent manipulation or duplication of keys, thereby safeguarding the electoral process. In India, where millions of votes are cast electronically, the EKR is a critical component of election security. Questions about the EKR may appear in exams for civil services or election-related roles, as it exemplifies transparency in democratic processes.
