Essential Health Package
Full Form of EHP
What is EHP?
The Essential Health Package (EHP) is a strategically selected set of cost-effective, high-priority health services aimed at addressing India's major disease burden and improving health outcomes. Conceived under the Ayushman Bharat initiative, EHP forms the backbone of the government's push toward Universal Health Coverage. It encompasses preventive, promotive, curative, and rehabilitative interventions for conditions ranging from maternal and child health, communicable diseases like tuberculosis, to non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. The package is delivered primarily through Primary Health Centers (PHCs) and Community Health Centers (CHCs) with robust referral linkages to district hospitals. State health departments and district health societies use EHP to prioritize resource allocation, monitor service delivery, and reduce out-of-pocket expenditure for the poor. It is a critical tool in policy planning and is often referenced in National Health Mission guidelines and state health budgets. For aspirants preparing for UPSC, state civil services, and public health exams, understanding EHP is essential for questions on health sector reforms and social justice.
