Emergency Contraceptive Pill
Full Form of ECP
What is ECP?
The Emergency Contraceptive Pill (ECP) is a type of oral contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure, such as a broken condom. In India, ECP is commonly known as the 'morning-after pill' and is available over the counter at pharmacies without a prescription. It contains hormones, typically levonorgestrel or ulipristal acetate, that work by delaying or inhibiting ovulation, preventing fertilization, or altering the uterine lining to prevent implantation. ECP is intended for emergency use only and is not a regular method of birth control. It is most effective when taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, with higher efficacy closer to the event. The pill is widely used across urban and rural India, particularly among young adults and women of reproductive age. In school and college health curricula, ECP is discussed as part of reproductive health education, and it appears in biology and health science examinations. However, awareness about its correct usage, side effects like nausea and menstrual changes, and the importance of follow-up contraception remains limited. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India includes ECP in its family planning guidelines, emphasizing its role in reducing unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions. Despite its availability, proper counseling is recommended to ensure safe and effective use.
