Echocardiography
Full Form of ECH
What is ECH?
Echocardiography (ECH) is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to create detailed images of the heart's structure and function. It allows physicians to assess heart chambers, valves, wall motion, and blood flow in real time, making it a cornerstone of cardiac evaluation. In India, echocardiography is widely used in hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic centres to detect conditions such as heart valve disorders, cardiomyopathies, congenital heart defects, and pericardial diseases. It is often performed as an outpatient procedure and is considered safe, painless, and radiation-free. The technique is commonly employed during routine health check-ups, pre-operative assessments, and emergency care for chest pain or breathlessness. With the rising prevalence of cardiovascular diseases in India—accounting for nearly 25-30% of all deaths—echocardiography plays a critical role in early diagnosis and management. Medical students and professionals, especially in cardiology and radiology, routinely study ECH as part of their curriculum. For competitive exams like NEET PG and USMLE, knowledge of echocardiography indications and interpretation is frequently tested. The availability of portable echocardiography machines has also expanded its use in rural and remote areas, improving cardiac care access across the country.
