Direct On Line
Full Form of DOL
What is DOL?
Direct On Line (DOL) is an electrical motor starting method where the motor is connected directly to the power supply at full voltage. In India, DOL starters are widely used for small to medium three-phase induction motors, especially in industries like manufacturing, agriculture, and water pumping. The starter consists of a contactor, overload relay, and a start/stop push button. When the start button is pressed, the contactor closes and applies full line voltage to the motor, causing it to accelerate rapidly. DOL starting is simple, cost-effective, and requires minimal maintenance, making it a popular choice for Indian workshops and small factories. However, it draws a high inrush current—about 6-8 times the rated current—which can cause voltage dips on weak grids. Therefore, electricity distribution companies in India often restrict DOL starters to motors below 5 HP (3.7 kW). For larger motors, alternatives like star-delta or soft starters are recommended. Electrical engineering students in India are frequently tested on DOL starter circuit diagrams, contactor selection, and overload relay settings. Understanding DOL is essential for designing safe and compliant motor control panels as per Indian Standard IS/IEC 60947. The term is commonly encountered in industrial training, ITI courses, and competitive exams such as GATE, SSC JE, and state electricity board exams.
