Miniature Circuit Breaker
Full Form of MCB
What is MCB?
A Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) is an electromechanical device that automatically switches off an electrical circuit in the event of an overload or short circuit. In India, MCBs have largely replaced traditional fuses in residential, commercial, and industrial installations due to their resettable nature and faster response. They are rated for low current circuits (typically up to 100A) and are a standard component in modern electrical distribution boards. MCBs are widely used across Indian homes and offices, ensuring safety by preventing wire overheating and potential fires. They are also crucial in industrial panels for machinery protection. In Indian electrical engineering curricula and competitive exams like SSC JE, PSUs, and GATE, understanding MCB operation, types (B, C, D curves), and tripping characteristics is frequently tested. The device operates on thermal and magnetic principles: a bimetallic strip for overload and a solenoid for short circuit. MCBs are available in single-pole, double-pole, triple-pole, and four-pole configurations to suit different phase requirements.
