Dementia with Lewy Bodies
Full Form of DLB
What is DLB?
Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the accumulation of abnormal protein deposits called Lewy bodies in the brain. It is the second most common type of degenerative dementia after Alzheimer's disease. DLB presents with fluctuating cognition, recurrent visual hallucinations, and parkinsonism (rigidity, bradykinesia, tremor). In India, DLB is often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease due to overlapping symptoms and limited awareness among healthcare providers. The condition primarily affects individuals over 60 years of age and significantly impacts quality of life. Diagnosis relies on clinical criteria, including cognitive fluctuations, REM sleep behavior disorder, and neuroleptic sensitivity. There is no cure, but management focuses on symptomatic treatment with cholinesterase inhibitors and careful use of antipsychotics. For Indian medical students and professionals, DLB is a high-yield topic in neurology and psychiatry exams such as NEET PG, USMLE, and MRCP. Early recognition is critical to avoid harmful treatments and improve patient outcomes. Multidisciplinary care involving neurologists, psychiatrists, and caregivers is essential for optimal management.
