Vitamin A Deficiency
Full Form of VAD
What is VAD?
Vitamin A Deficiency, commonly abbreviated as VAD, is a public health condition characterised by insufficient levels of vitamin A in the body, leading to visual impairment, weakened immunity, and increased susceptibility to infections. In India, VAD remains a significant nutritional concern, particularly among children under five years of age and pregnant or lactating women. The Government of India has been running several programmes to combat this deficiency, including the administration of vitamin A supplements through the National Health Mission and the Integrated Child Development Services scheme. School health programmes in states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Odisha, and Madhya Pradesh regularly distribute vitamin A doses to young children as a preventive measure. The condition is most prevalent in rural and tribal areas where dietary diversity is limited and access to vitamin A-rich foods such as leafy vegetables, carrots, papaya, and dairy products is inadequate. VAD is a recurring topic in UPSC, AIIMS, NEET PG, and various state-level public health examinations, making it essential for medical aspirants and civil services candidates to understand its epidemiology, clinical manifestations, and national prevention strategies.
