Canteen Stores Department
Full Form of CSD
What is CSD?
The Canteen Stores Department (CSD) is a government-run retail organization under the Ministry of Defence of India. It operates a network of canteens and retail outlets exclusively for serving personnel, veterans, and families of the armed forces and paramilitary forces. CSD provides a wide range of consumer goods—including groceries, electronics, clothing, and household items—at subsidized rates, making essential products more affordable for defence personnel. Established in 1921, CSD has grown into a massive supply chain covering over 4,000 outlets across India, including in remote border areas. Its role is not only economic but also morale-building, as it ensures that those serving the nation have access to quality goods at lower prices. CSD is often referenced in defence-related examinations and general knowledge sections of competitive exams like CDS and NDA, where its function as a welfare organization for the military is highlighted. The department is also known for its strict eligibility criteria, with access restricted to authorized cardholders. Its operations are guided by the principles of non-profit distribution and self-sufficiency, and it contributes significantly to the welfare of India’s uniformed personnel.
