Childhood Heart Valve Disease
Full Form of CHVD
What is CHVD?
Childhood Heart Valve Disease (CHVD) refers to a range of conditions affecting the valves of the heart in children, including congenital malformations and acquired disorders that disrupt normal blood flow. The mitral and aortic valves are most commonly involved, and symptoms may include fatigue, breathlessness, poor growth, and recurrent respiratory infections. In India, CHVD cases are frequently identified at tertiary paediatric cardiology centres such as AIIMS, Fortis, and Narayana Hrudayalaya, where paediatric cardiac surgeons perform valve repairs and replacements. The condition is significant because early diagnosis through echocardiography can prevent complications like pulmonary hypertension and heart failure. Treatment options include balloon valvuloplasty, surgical valve repair, and in severe cases, mechanical or bioprosthetic valve replacement. CHVD is an important topic for Indian medical students, especially those preparing for NEET PG, MBBS paediatrics, and DM paediatric cardiology entrance examinations, where questions on congenital heart defects appear regularly in both theory and clinical case discussions.
