Cheque
Full Form of CHK
What is CHK?
A cheque is a negotiable instrument that orders a bank to pay a specific sum of money from the drawer's account to the person named on the cheque. In India, cheques are regulated under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, and are widely used for both personal and business transactions, such as paying bills, tuition fees, rent, and supplier invoices. They offer a secure alternative to cash, providing a paper trail and reducing the risk of theft. Cheques are commonly used in salary disbursements, security deposits, and inter-bank transfers, although digital payment methods like NEFT and UPI are gaining popularity. In the Indian banking sector, the term 'CHK' appears on cheque forms, ledgers, and transaction slips as a shorthand for 'cheque'. For competitive exams like IBPS PO, SBI Clerk, and RBI Grade B, understanding the features of cheques, crossing types (general and special), and endorsement rules is essential. Cheques also play a role in legal disputes over dishonour, covered under Section 138 of the Act. Despite the rise of online banking, cheques remain a trusted instrument for high-value payments and for individuals without direct digital access. Their continued use in rural and semi-urban areas underscores their importance in India's financial ecosystem.
