Doordarshan
Full Form of DD
What is DD?
Doordarshan (DD) is India's public service broadcaster, owned and operated by Prasar Bharati, a statutory autonomous body under the Government of India. Established in 1959 as an experimental television service, it began regular daily transmissions on September 15, 1965, and expanded rapidly through terrestrial and satellite networks. DD is the largest broadcasting network in India, reaching over 90% of the population through its multiple channels, including DD National, DD News, DD Sports, and numerous regional language services. It serves as a vital medium for disseminating information, education, entertainment, and culture, especially in rural and remote areas where private television access is limited. Doordarshan is frequently referenced in competitive exam syllabi for General Knowledge and Current Affairs, particularly in questions about Indian media, communication policies, and landmark developments like the introduction of color TV in 1982 or the launch of satellite channels. Its role during national emergencies, sporting events, and government schemes makes it a significant entity in India’s socio-political landscape.
