Real-Time Gross Settlement

What is RTGS?

Real-Time Gross Settlement, abbreviated as RTGS, is an electronic funds transfer system maintained by the Reserve Bank of India, enabling instantaneous and individual settlement of high-value transactions. Unlike net settlement systems, RTGS processes each transaction on a gross basis, meaning the funds are transferred from one bank to another in real time and on a one-to-one basis without clubbing or batching. This ensures finality and irrevocability of the payment, reducing credit risk significantly. In India, RTGS is widely used by corporations, government entities, and individuals for large-value transfers, such as business payments, property purchases, or interbank settlements. The system operates on all working days, typically from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, although the RBI has been moving towards making it available round the clock on all days. A key feature is the minimum transaction amount of ₹2 lakh, with no upper limit, making it ideal for high-value remittances. The charges for RTGS transactions are levied by banks as per RBI guidelines, with fees often waived for online transactions. RTGS is critical for the stability of the Indian financial system, ensuring seamless liquidity flow across banks. For competitive exams like banking awareness, UPSC, and RBI Grade B, understanding RTGS, its operational hours, and its distinction from NEFT and IMPS is highly relevant, reflecting the broader digital payment infrastructure of the country.
