Combined Engineering Services
Full Form of CES
What is CES?
Combined Engineering Services (CES) is a prestigious examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in India, designed to recruit engineers for various central government departments and ministries. It serves as a gateway for engineering graduates to secure positions such as Assistant Executive Engineer, Assistant Engineer, and Junior Engineer in organizations like the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), Indian Railways, Telecommunications, and the Ministry of Defence. The CES examination, also referred to as the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) in some contexts, is held annually and comprises a three-stage selection process: a written exam, interview, and document verification. Successful candidates are placed in Group A and Group B services under the Government of India. This exam is highly relevant for Indian engineering students aiming for a stable career in the public sector, with positions offering job security, attractive perks, and opportunities for advancement. The CES is distinct from other engineering exams like GATE as it specifically targets recruitment into central engineering services rather than postgraduate admissions or public sector undertakings. Aspirants often prepare alongside other UPSC exams, making CES a key component of India's competitive examination ecosystem. The exam tests knowledge in engineering disciplines, general studies, and aptitude, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of candidates for technical roles in government.
