Bovine Leukemia Virus
Full Form of BLV
What is BLV?
Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV) is a retrovirus that causes enzootic bovine leukosis, a chronic lymphoproliferative disease in cattle. In India, BLV poses a significant threat to the dairy industry, leading to reduced milk production, increased culling, and substantial economic losses. The virus is transmitted horizontally through blood, colostrum, and milk, and vertically from dam to calf. Many infected cattle remain asymptomatic carriers, making detection challenging. BLV is prevalent in several Indian states, and awareness among dairy farmers and veterinarians is crucial for control. The National Dairy Development Board and state animal husbandry departments have initiated surveillance programs. In veterinary science, BLV is a key topic in infectious diseases of cattle, often appearing in competitive exams like ICAR-JRF and state veterinary officer exams. Understanding its pathogenesis, diagnosis via ELISA, and management through biosecurity measures is essential for livestock health professionals.
