Bovine Viral Diarrhea
Full Form of BVD
What is BVD?
Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) is a contagious viral disease affecting cattle, caused by the Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV), a member of the Pestivirus genus. It is a significant concern for the Indian livestock sector, especially in states like Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh where dairy farming is prominent. BVD leads to economic losses through reduced milk production, reproductive failures, respiratory issues, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections. The disease is transmitted via direct contact with infected animals, contaminated feed, water, or equipment, and can also spread through fetal infection in pregnant cows. In India, BVD is monitored by veterinary departments and research institutions like the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI). It is commonly diagnosed through ELISA and PCR tests. BVD is a notifiable disease in several countries, and India has surveillance programs to control its spread. For students pursuing veterinary science or animal husbandry, understanding BVD is crucial for competitive exams such as ICAR JRF, SRF, and state animal husbandry officer exams. Awareness of BVD helps in implementing biosecurity measures and vaccination strategies to protect livestock health.
