Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation
Full Form of BIMSTEC
What is BIMSTEC?
BIMSTEC is a regional organisation established in 1997 (originally as BIST-EC) to foster cooperation among countries bordering the Bay of Bengal. Its current member states are India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal, and Bhutan. The initiative focuses on 14 priority sectors including trade, investment, technology, energy, transport, tourism, fisheries, agriculture, and counter-terrorism. For India, BIMSTEC serves as a vital bridge between South Asia and Southeast Asia, complementing its Act East Policy. The grouping holds summits and ministerial meetings periodically, with the secretariat located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. In Indian competitive exams like UPSC, State PCS, and banking, BIMSTEC appears in current affairs and international relations sections, especially regarding its role in regional connectivity and maritime security. The organisation provides a platform for inclusive growth and integration, with India often taking a leading role in initiatives such as the BIMSTEC Master Plan for Transport Connectivity and the proposed Free Trade Agreement. Despite challenges like political instability in member states, BIMSTEC remains a key forum for multilateral dialogue and economic development in the Bay of Bengal region.
