Association of Southeast Asian Nations
Full Form of ASEAN
What is ASEAN?
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a regional intergovernmental organisation comprising ten Southeast Asian countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Established in 1967 in Bangkok, ASEAN aims to promote political and economic cooperation, regional stability, and cultural integration among its members. Its core principles, encapsulated in the ASEAN Charter, include non-interference in internal affairs, consensus-based decision-making, and respect for sovereignty. For India, ASEAN holds significant strategic importance under India’s Act East Policy, which seeks to deepen economic ties, maritime security cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges with the region. ASEAN is a key partner in forums such as the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN Regional Forum. The organisation is widely referenced in Indian foreign policy discussions, business trade data (ASEAN is one of India’s largest trading partners), and civil service examinations like UPSC, where questions on regional groupings and India’s neighbourhood are common. ASEAN’s role in maintaining the Indo-Pacific balance and its centrality in Asian multilateralism makes it a crucial topic for Indian students and professionals alike.
