What is BRICS?
BRICS is an intergovernmental organization comprising five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Originally coined as 'BRIC' in 2001 by economist Jim O'Neill, South Africa was added in 2010, expanding the group to BRICS. The bloc promotes economic cooperation, political dialogue, and cultural exchange among its members, representing over 40% of the world's population and about 25% of global GDP. In India, BRICS is significant as it provides a platform to voice the Global South's concerns, advocate for multilateralism, and strengthen trade ties with other major developing economies. The group holds annual summits where leaders discuss issues such as financial reforms, climate change, terrorism, and sustainable development. India actively participates in BRICS initiatives like the New Development Bank (NDB) and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA). BRICS is frequently mentioned in Indian foreign policy discourse, competitive exams like UPSC, and news debates. Its role in counterbalancing Western-dominated institutions makes it a key topic for aspirants studying international relations and global governance.
