Anti-Retroviral
Full Form of ARV
What is ARV?
ARV stands for Anti-Retroviral, a class of medications used to treat retroviral infections, most notably HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). In India, ARV drugs form the cornerstone of the National AIDS Control Programme (NACP), run by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO). These medicines work by suppressing viral replication, thereby reducing the viral load in a patient's body, boosting immunity, and preventing the progression to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). ARV therapy is administered free of cost at government ART (Antiretroviral Therapy) centres across India, making treatment accessible to millions. The drugs are taken as a lifelong regimen, often in combination (highly active antiretroviral therapy, HAART), to prevent drug resistance. ARVs also play a critical role in preventing mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) during pregnancy and childbirth. In Indian medical exams like NEET PG and AIIMS, ARV mechanisms and protocols are frequently tested, especially in the context of HIV management and national health programmes. Outside clinical settings, ARV is a common acronym in public health discussions, policy documents, and awareness campaigns. Its widespread use underscores India's commitment to combating the HIV epidemic through affordable and scalable treatment solutions.
