Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
Full Form of ALL
What is ALL?
Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is a type of blood cancer that originates in the bone marrow, where abnormal lymphocytes proliferate rapidly. It is the most common childhood cancer in India, accounting for nearly 80% of pediatric leukemia cases. ALL is characterized by the overproduction of immature white blood cells, which crowd out normal cells and lead to anemia, infections, and bleeding. The condition can also involve the central nervous system. Diagnosis typically involves blood tests, bone marrow aspiration, and immunophenotyping. Treatment includes intensive chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and sometimes stem cell transplantation. In India, specialized centers like Tata Memorial Hospital and AIIMS follow standard protocols such as the BFM regimen. Early detection and treatment have dramatically improved survival rates, with over 85% of children achieving remission. ALL is a critical topic for medical students preparing for NEET PG or USMLE, as it exemplifies rapid disease progression and modern therapeutic strategies.
