Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
Full Form of CLL
What is CLL?
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) is a type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow, characterized by the slow accumulation of abnormal lymphocytes. It is the most common form of leukemia in adults in Western countries, but its incidence is rising in India due to increased awareness and diagnostic capabilities. CLL typically progresses slowly, and many patients remain asymptomatic for years. It is diagnosed through blood tests, flow cytometry, and bone marrow biopsy. In India, CLL is managed by hematologists and oncologists, with treatment options including chemotherapy, targeted therapies like ibrutinib, and immunotherapy. The disease is more common in older adults, with a median age at diagnosis of around 70 years. Patients often present with lymph node swelling, fatigue, and recurrent infections. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has included CLL in its cancer registry programs to better understand its epidemiology in the Indian population. Knowledge of CLL is important for medical students preparing for exams like NEET PG, as it is a frequently tested topic in hematology. Early diagnosis and personalized treatment have improved survival rates, making CLL a manageable chronic condition for many patients.
