Bone Marrow Transplantation
Full Form of BMT
What is BMT?
Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) is a medical procedure in which damaged or diseased bone marrow is replaced with healthy stem cells. The bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside bones that produces blood cells, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. BMT is primarily used to treat conditions such as leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, aplastic anemia, and certain immune deficiency disorders. In India, BMT has become an increasingly accessible treatment option, with major hospitals in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, and Bangalore offering both autologous (using the patient’s own cells) and allogeneic (using a donor’s cells) transplants. The procedure is typically performed in specialized transplant units and requires careful matching of human leukocyte antigen (HLA) types between donor and recipient to reduce the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). BMT is often a life-saving intervention for patients with blood cancers and blood disorders. In the context of Indian healthcare, government initiatives and private philanthropic programs have helped subsidize the cost for underprivileged patients. For medical entrance exams like NEET PG, understanding the indications, complications, and steps of BMT is important. The field continues to evolve with advances in stem cell science and immunosuppressive therapies, improving survival rates and quality of life for transplant recipients.
