Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America
Full Form of ALBA
What is ALBA?
The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) is a political and economic integration bloc founded in 2004 by Venezuela and Cuba, aimed at promoting social welfare, anti-imperialism, and cooperation among Latin American and Caribbean nations. Named after Simón Bolívar, ALBA emphasizes solidarity, complementarity, and mutual aid over free-market competition. In the Indian context, ALBA is studied as a key example of regional South-South cooperation and alternative development models. It is frequently referenced in UPSC, UGC NET, and other competitive examinations under international relations and current affairs segments, especially during discussions on India's engagement with Latin America. The alliance operates through ideological alignment rather than strict trade pacts, with member countries sharing resources such as oil and medical personnel. While India is not a member, it has observer status and has signed memoranda of understanding with several ALBA nations. The bloc’s stance against neoliberal policies resonates in Indian academic debates on globalization. ALBA is also covered in newspaper editorials and diplomatic reports when discussing multipolar world order and global governance reforms.
