Community of Latin American and Caribbean States
Full Form of CELAC
What is CELAC?
The Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) is a regional bloc comprising 33 sovereign states in the Americas. Formed in 2011, it serves as a forum for political coordination, economic integration, and social cooperation among Latin American and Caribbean nations, excluding the United States and Canada. CELAC aims to strengthen regional identity, promote sustainable development, and amplify the collective voice of its members in global forums such as the United Nations. For India, CELAC represents an important partner in South-South cooperation, with joint initiatives in areas like renewable energy, agriculture, and pharmaceuticals. India-CELAC relations have grown through biennial ministerial meetings and trade agreements, making the bloc a key platform for India’s engagement with the region. The acronym is frequently used in diplomatic communiqués, international relations textbooks, and news articles covering Latin American affairs. In Indian competitive exams like UPSC and NDA, questions on CELAC often appear in the International Relations section, testing knowledge of regional groupings and India’s foreign policy outreach.
