Auxiliary Health Worker
Full Form of AHW
What is AHW?
An Auxiliary Health Worker (AHW) is a frontline healthcare provider in India's rural health system, primarily male, who works at the sub-centre level under the National Health Mission (NHM). AHWs deliver basic medical care, conduct health education sessions, perform disease surveillance, and assist in immunization drives and national health programs. They serve as a vital link between the community and higher-level health facilities like Primary Health Centres (PHCs). The role was formalized in the 1970s and strengthened under the NHM to address rural health workforce gaps. AHWs are trained for six months to one year and are responsible for maintaining health records, distributing contraceptives, and managing common ailments such as fever, diarrhoea, and minor infections. In exams like UPSC, state PCS, and nursing officer recruitment, questions on AHW duties and their place in the public health system are common. Their contribution is especially critical in remote areas where access to doctors is limited, making them indispensable to India's primary healthcare framework.
