Automated External Defibrillator
Full Form of AED
What is AED?
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that diagnoses life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias such as ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia, and delivers an electric shock to restore a normal heart rhythm. In India, AEDs are increasingly placed in public spaces like airports, railway stations, shopping malls, schools, and corporate offices as part of emergency preparedness initiatives. They are designed for use by laypersons with minimal training, using voice prompts and visual cues. The Indian government and health organizations have promoted AED training under the 'Public Access Defibrillation' program to improve survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest, a leading cause of death nationwide. Medical students, nursing professionals, and first responders often study AED operation in BLS (Basic Life Support) and ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) courses. For competitive exams like NEET PG, AIIMS, or nursing exams, questions on AED indications and usage frequently appear, emphasizing its role in the 'Chain of Survival' concept.
