Adult Basic Education
Full Form of ABE
What is ABE?
Adult Basic Education (ABE) is a government-led initiative in India aimed at providing foundational literacy and numeracy skills to adults who missed formal schooling. Under the Saakshar Bharat mission, launched in 2009, ABE targets adults aged 15 and above, especially women and marginalized communities, to achieve functional literacy. The program is delivered through community-based centers, often run by local volunteers or NGOs, and covers reading, writing, arithmetic, and life skills. ABE is crucial for empowering individuals to participate in civic life, improve livelihoods, and support family education. It is referenced in government reports, educational policies, and schemes like the National Literacy Mission. For competitive exams such as UGC NET Education, CTET, or state teacher eligibility tests, understanding ABE is important as it forms a key part of adult education and lifelong learning concepts. The program also aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4 on inclusive and equitable quality education.
