Virus Transport Medium
Full Form of VTM
What is VTM?
Virus Transport Medium, commonly abbreviated as VTM, is a specially formulated sterile liquid solution used to collect, transport, and preserve clinical specimens, particularly nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs, for the laboratory diagnosis of viral infections. In India, VTM became a widely recognised term during the COVID-19 pandemic when it was used in massive quantities for collecting samples from suspected coronavirus patients at government testing centres, private laboratories, hospitals, and home collection facilities across both urban and rural regions. The medium typically contains a buffered salt solution along with antibiotics and antifungal agents that prevent bacterial and fungal contamination while maintaining the viability and genetic integrity of viruses during transit from collection sites to molecular diagnostic laboratories, ensuring accurate RT-PCR and other nucleic acid test results. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology approved specific VTM formulations for use throughout the country's extensive COVID-19 testing network. VTM is frequently covered in microbiology, clinical pathology, and biotechnology curricula, making it an important topic for NEET, AIIMS, and other medical competitive examinations in India.
