Vishwakarma Yojana

What is VSY?

Vishwakarma Yojana (VSY) is a centrally sponsored skill development and livelihood promotion scheme launched by the Government of India to support traditional artisans, craftspeople, and workers engaged in eighteen identified heritage trades including pottery, weaving, blacksmithing, carpentry, and goldsmithing. The scheme provides free skill training, toolkit incentives, digital identity recognition through a PM Vishwakarma certificate, and easy access to low-interest credit through partner banks and NBFCs. In India, the scheme is implemented across all states and union territories through Common Service Centres, MSME-DI offices, and designated implementing agencies, helping lakhs of informal sector workers upgrade their skills and integrate with formal markets. Beneficiaries also receive marketing support and onboarding onto e-commerce platforms like GeM and ONDC. The scheme holds strong relevance for candidates preparing for UPSC, SSC, state PSCs, and banking examinations, as questions on welfare schemes and MSME-focused government initiatives appear frequently in the general awareness and current affairs sections of these competitive tests.
