Vesicular Stomatitis Virus
Full Form of VSV
What is VSV?
Vesicular Stomatitis Virus, commonly abbreviated as VSV, is a virus belonging to the family Rhabdoviridae that primarily affects livestock such as cattle, horses, and pigs, causing a disease known as vesicular stomatitis. The infection leads to the development of fluid-filled blisters and ulcers in the mouth, on the tongue, teats, and around the hooves of affected animals, often resulting in drooling, lameness, and a noticeable drop in milk production. In India, VSV holds considerable importance in the veterinary and agricultural sectors, as outbreaks can severely impact dairy farming and the rural economy that depends on cattle and buffalo populations. The disease is contagious and, although rarely transmissible to humans, is classified as a notifiable disease by international animal health authorities. Veterinary institutions and research bodies like the Indian Veterinary Research Institute monitor VSV strains circulating in the country. Awareness of VSV is essential for students preparing for veterinary, medical, and agricultural competitive examinations, as questions on livestock diseases frequently appear in UPSC, ICAR, and state-level veterinary officer recruitment tests.
