Vishisht Seva Medal
Full Form of VSM
What is VSM?
The Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) is a distinguished military decoration awarded by the Government of India to recognise exceptional and devoted service rendered by members of the Indian Armed Forces. Instituted on 26 January 1960, the medal is conferred upon officers and personnel of the Army, Navy, and Air Force for acts of distinguished service of a high order that do not warrant the higher gallantry awards. The VSM holds a respected place in India's military honours system, ranking below the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and above the Sena Medal in the order of precedence. Recipients receive a medal along with a certificate, and the award is typically presented during the Republic Day or Independence Day investiture ceremonies by the President of India. It is commonly conferred upon commanding officers, senior service personnel, and those involved in significant operational or administrative achievements across the three services. For Indian competitive examinations, the VSM is an important topic under the Defence and National Security sections of UPSC, NDA, CDS, and SSC, where candidates are frequently tested on military awards and their hierarchy.
