Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is a synthetic thermoplastic polymer, one of the most widely produced plastics in the world. It is created through the polymerization of vinyl chloride monomer and is valued for its durability, low cost, and versatility. In India, PVC holds immense significance, particularly in the construction and infrastructure sectors. It is commonly used to manufacture pipes for water supply, drainage, and sewage systems, replacing traditional materials like metal and concrete due to its resistance to corrosion and ease of installation. PVC is also utilized in electrical cable insulation, flooring, window frames, medical devices such as blood bags and tubing, and even in packaging. Its ability to be either rigid or flexible, depending on the addition of plasticizers, makes it adaptable for diverse applications. The material is extensively used in both urban and rural Indian settings, from housing projects to large-scale government initiatives like the Swachh Bharat Mission, which promotes the use of PVC pipes for sanitation.
