Volume Spread Indicator
Full Form of VSI
What is VSI?
Volume Spread Indicator, commonly abbreviated as VSI, is a technical analysis tool widely used by traders and investors in Indian stock markets including the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). It is essentially a price-volume oscillator that helps market participants identify bullish or bearish divergences between price movements and trading volume, making it easier to anticipate potential trend reversals. The indicator works by comparing the spread of a trading bar with its corresponding volume, signalling accumulation or distribution phases in the market. In India, VSI is particularly popular among intraday traders and swing traders who actively track Nifty 50, Bank Nifty, and individual large-cap stocks listed on domestic exchanges. Many charting platforms available to Indian retail investors, such as TradingView, ChartIQ, and broker-provided tools like Zerodha Kite and Upstox, offer VSI as a built-in indicator for chart analysis. The concept is frequently discussed in technical analysis courses and certifications like the NSE's NCFM modules, making it relevant for students pursuing careers in financial markets, equity research, or algorithmic trading in India.
