On Balance Volume
Full Form of OBV
What is OBV?
On Balance Volume (OBV) is a technical analysis indicator used in stock trading to measure cumulative volume flow relative to price movements. Developed by Joseph Granville in the 1960s, OBV adds the day's trading volume to a running total when the stock closes higher, and subtracts it when the stock closes lower. This creates a line that can confirm price trends or signal divergences. In the Indian context, OBV is widely applied by traders on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) for equities, indices, and derivatives. It is particularly useful for identifying accumulation or distribution phases before price moves. Brokers and technical analysts incorporate OBV charts alongside other tools like RSI and MACD. For students pursuing certifications such as NCFM (NSE’s certification in financial markets) or CFA, understanding OBV is essential for interpreting volume-driven price behavior. The indicator helps filter out noise and provides early warnings of trend reversals. However, it is not a standalone predictor and should be used with other forms of analysis. OBV remains a staple in Indian technical analysis education and practice.
