Vehicle Routing Problem
Full Form of VRP
What is VRP?
The Vehicle Routing Problem, commonly abbreviated as VRP, is a combinatorial optimisation and integer programming challenge that seeks the most efficient set of routes for a fleet of vehicles to deliver goods or services to a given set of customers. It plays a critical role in India’s rapidly growing logistics, e-commerce, and supply chain sectors, where companies like Flipkart, Amazon India, and various FMCG distributors rely on VRP-based algorithms to cut fuel costs, reduce delivery times, and improve last-mile efficiency. The problem was first introduced by George Dantzig and John Ramser in 1959, and since then it has been applied across warehouse management, postal services, public transportation, and waste collection in Indian cities. Variations such as the Capacitated VRP and VRP with Time Windows are widely studied. For Indian students, VRP is a high-value topic in operations research, data science, and management courses offered at IITs, IIMs, and other premier institutes.
