Vaccine Preventable Diseases
Full Form of VPD
What is VPD?
Vaccine Preventable Diseases (VPDs) are infectious illnesses that can be effectively controlled or eliminated through timely and complete immunization against their causative pathogens. In India, VPDs represent a major focus of public health policy, with the government's Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) protecting children against diseases including measles, polio, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, tuberculosis, hepatitis B, rotavirus, and Japanese encephalitis. The Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) additionally recommends vaccines for typhoid, influenza, HPV, and varicella in its optional immunization schedule. Active surveillance of VPDs is conducted nationwide through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) to monitor outbreaks and assess vaccine effectiveness. Medical students study VPDs extensively across community medicine, pediatrics, and microbiology curricula, making it a recurring topic in NEET-PG, INI-CET, UPSC CMS, and various state PSC examinations. Healthcare professionals across government hospitals, primary health centres, and private clinics use the term VPD daily when planning vaccination drives, counselling parents, and reporting adverse events following immunization.
