Vagus Nerve Stimulation
Full Form of VNS
What is VNS?
Vagus Nerve Stimulation, commonly abbreviated as VNS, is a medical therapy that involves delivering mild electrical pulses to the vagus nerve, usually through a small pulse generator implanted under the skin in the chest area. The device sends signals to the brain through the nerve, helping to regulate abnormal electrical activity and mood-related chemicals. In India, VNS is primarily used for patients suffering from drug-resistant epilepsy and treatment-resistant depression when medications fail to provide adequate relief. Major tertiary hospitals and neurology centres in metropolitan cities such as AIIMS Delhi, NIMHANS Bengaluru, and several private super-speciality hospitals offer VNS implantation. The procedure is considered when at least two appropriate antiseizure medicines have failed. For medical aspirants preparing for NEET PG, INI-CET, or USMLE, understanding VNS is important as it frequently appears in neurology and psychiatry sections of competitive examinations and clinical case discussions.
