What is VNF?
Virtual Network Function, commonly abbreviated as VNF, refers to a software-based implementation of network functions that traditionally ran on proprietary hardware appliances. These functions include firewalls, load balancers, routers, and intrusion detection systems, which are now deployed as virtual instances on standard servers. In India, VNF plays a crucial role in the rapid expansion of telecom infrastructure, particularly with the rollout of 4G and 5G networks by operators like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea. The Department of Telecommunications and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India actively promote VNF adoption to reduce capital expenditure and enhance network scalability.
