Voice Mailbox
Full Form of VMB
What is VMB?
Voice Mailbox (VMB) is a telecommunications service that allows telephone users to receive, store, and retrieve voice messages when they are unable to answer incoming calls. In India, this service was popularised by state-owned telecom operators such as BSNL and MTNL during the late 1990s and early 2000s, providing subscribers with a personal electronic answering system linked directly to their phone numbers. The service assigns each user a unique voice mailbox number where callers can leave audio messages, which the subscriber can later access by dialling a specific short code from their handset. VMB proved especially useful for working professionals, doctors, and business users who frequently missed calls during meetings, travel, or off-hours. Although modern smartphone voicemail apps and cloud-based messaging platforms have largely replaced traditional voice mailbox systems, the term remains familiar to Indian users. It frequently appears in general awareness and reasoning sections of competitive examinations where basic telecom abbreviations are tested.
