Multimedia Messaging Service
Full Form of MMS
What is MMS?
Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) is a standard mobile messaging technology that extends the capabilities of Short Message Service (SMS) by allowing users to send messages that include multimedia content such as images, audio, video clips, and rich text. Unlike SMS, which is limited to 160 characters of plain text, MMS can deliver a variety of media formats over cellular networks. In India, MMS gained widespread popularity in the mid-2000s with the rise of feature phones, enabling users to share photos and ringtones directly between devices. It was commonly supported by telecom operators like Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Reliance Jio, though its usage has declined with the advent of instant messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram, which offer similar features over internet data. MMS still operates on older networks and is occasionally used for automated alerts or promotional content from businesses. For competitive exams like banking or telecom-related roles, understanding the difference between SMS and MMS is a fundamental concept in mobile communication technologies.
