Vendor Lead Index
Full Form of VLI
What is VLI?
Vendor Lead Index, commonly abbreviated as VLI, is a key performance indicator used in supply chain management and procurement to measure the average time taken by a supplier or vendor to deliver goods and services after an order has been placed. It essentially tracks vendor reliability, responsiveness, and overall lead time efficiency across the procurement cycle. In India, VLI is widely adopted by manufacturing hubs in Pune, Chennai, and the National Capital Region, where companies in automotive, FMCG, and pharmaceutical sectors monitor vendor performance to streamline inventory and reduce working capital costs. Procurement teams use VLI dashboards to identify slow-performing suppliers, negotiate tighter delivery commitments, and benchmark vendors against industry standards. The metric is also integrated with ERP systems like SAP and Oracle for real-time tracking. For students, VLI forms an important part of operations management syllabi under MBA programmes and is frequently tested in supply chain certification exams such as CSCP, CLTD, and CPSM offered by global bodies with Indian centres.
