Landing Ship Logistics
Full Form of LSL
What is LSL?
Landing Ship Logistics (LSL) is a class of naval amphibious warfare vessels designed to transport and land military personnel, vehicles, and supplies directly onto shore without requiring docks or ports. In the Indian context, the Indian Navy operates LSL-class ships as part of its amphibious fleet, primarily to support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) missions, island defence, and logistics support for remote outposts such as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. These ships are equipped with well decks, helicopter landing platforms, and heavy-lift cranes, enabling them to deploy mechanised units and cargo in areas with limited infrastructure. LSLs are frequently used by the Indian Navy during joint exercises with other nations and in peacetime operations to sustain forward operating bases. The term is commonly encountered in defence examinations, especially those conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for the National Defence Academy (NDA) and Combined Defence Services (CDS) exams, where questions on naval assets and their roles frequently appear. Understanding the role of LSLs helps aspirants grasp India's maritime strategy and its emphasis on brown-water naval capabilities.
