Landing Helicopter Dock
Full Form of LHD
What is LHD?
A Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) is a type of amphibious assault ship designed to support helicopter operations, amphibious landings, and disaster relief missions. In the Indian context, LHDs are a key component of the Indian Navy's amphibious warfare capability. The Indian Navy operates INS Jalashwa (formerly USS Trenton), an Austin-class LPD that functions as a de facto LHD, and has plans to induct indigenous LHDs under the 'Project 76' initiative. These ships are used to transport troops, vehicles, and equipment, and provide a mobile platform for helicopter-based search-and-rescue, anti-submarine warfare, and medical evacuation operations. LHDs are also employed during humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations, such as during cyclones or tsunamis, where they can serve as command hubs and floating hospitals. The term is commonly used in naval strategy discussions, defence journals, and in the preparation of competitive exams like the CDS, NDA, and AFCAT. Understanding LHDs is important for defence aspirants, as questions about India's amphibious fleet and its role in power projection often appear in these examinations. The LHD's ability to combine aviation and amphibious capabilities makes it a versatile asset for the Indian Navy's blue-water operations.
