Vigilance Inspection Wing
Full Form of VIW
What is VIW?
The Vigilance Inspection Wing (VIW) is a dedicated administrative unit established within various Indian government departments and public sector undertakings to conduct surprise inspections, investigate complaints, and ensure adherence to established rules and procedures. Functioning under the broader framework of the Central Vigilance Commission, the VIW plays a crucial role in maintaining transparency, accountability, and integrity within public institutions across the country. It is particularly active in sectors like railways, defence establishments, banks, and central ministries, where its officers routinely examine financial transactions, procurement processes, and personnel matters to identify irregularities or malpractices. The wing submits its findings to senior authorities who decide on further disciplinary or legal action. For Indian competitive examinations such as UPSC Civil Services, SSC, and banking recruitment tests, understanding the structure and functions of vigilance bodies like the VIW is important, as questions on anti-corruption mechanisms and institutional frameworks frequently appear in the general awareness and governance sections. Several state governments have also constituted their own vigilance wings modeled on the central framework, with chief vigilance officers overseeing departmental investigations and coordinating with central agencies on major cases.
