Village Health Officer
Full Form of VHO
What is VHO?
A Village Health Officer, commonly abbreviated as VHO, is a grassroots public health functionary appointed to deliver primary healthcare services in rural and semi-urban areas of India. Working under the supervision of the Primary Health Centre (PHC) and in coordination with ASHA and ANM workers, the VHO is responsible for monitoring sanitation, water quality, maternal and child health, immunisation drives, communicable disease surveillance, and the maintenance of accurate health records at the village level. The role was significantly strengthened through the National Health Mission and various state-level public health programmes that aim to extend medical support to underserved populations. Village Health Officers are typically appointed by state public service commissions or district health societies, and recruitment is often through written examinations conducted by state bodies such as MPSC, TNPSC, or KPSC. The position holds considerable exam relevance for candidates preparing for state-level government health department recruitments, particularly in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Odisha, where the cadre is actively deployed across thousands of revenue villages.
