Valvular Heart Disease
Full Form of VHD
What is VHD?
Valvular Heart Disease, commonly abbreviated as VHD, refers to any disorder or damage affecting one or more of the four valves of the heart, namely the mitral, aortic, tricuspid, and pulmonary valves. These valves regulate blood flow through the heart chambers, and when they malfunction due to stenosis (narrowing) or regurgitation (leaking), the heart's pumping efficiency is compromised, leading to symptoms such as breathlessness, fatigue, chest pain, and palpitations. In India, VHD holds particular clinical importance because rheumatic heart disease remains a leading cause, especially among children and young adults in rural and lower-income populations, despite a gradual epidemiological shift towards degenerative causes in urban settings. The condition is routinely discussed in cardiology OPDs, medical wards, and during echocardiographic evaluations across government and private hospitals. It features prominently in the syllabus of MBBS, MD Medicine, and DM Cardiology courses, and frequently appears in NEET-PG, AIIMS, and PGI entrance examinations.
