Visual Function Questionnaire
Full Form of VFQ
What is VFQ?
The Visual Function Questionnaire, commonly referred to as VFQ, is a standardised clinical instrument designed to measure the influence of visual impairment on a person's daily functioning and overall quality of life. Developed originally by the National Eye Institute in the United States, the NEI-VFQ has been adapted, translated, and validated in many Indian languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Marathi for use across the country. In India, ophthalmologists, optometrists, and public health researchers use VFQ to assess outcomes of cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment, diabetic retinopathy management, and refractive error correction, especially in rural and underserved communities where the burden of avoidable blindness remains high. It captures patient-reported data across dimensions such as near and distance vision, colour perception, ocular pain, and social functioning. Postgraduate optometry, ophthalmology, and public health students in India often study VFQ methodology as part of clinical research training, making it a recurring topic in entrance and competitive examinations related to allied health sciences.
