Vocational Education Kendra
Full Form of VEK
What is VEK?
Vocational Education Kendra, commonly abbreviated as VEK, refers to skill-based training centres established across India to provide practical, job-oriented education to school dropouts, rural youth, and working professionals. These kendras operate at the grassroots level, often in semi-urban and rural belts, offering short-term certificate and diploma programmes in trades such as electrical work, plumbing, tailoring, mobile repair, computer applications, beauty culture, and food processing. VEKs are typically aligned with national missions like Skill India, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) framework, ensuring that learners receive certification recognised by industry. Many such centres are run in partnership with state governments, NGOs, or private training providers, and they serve as a bridge between traditional academic education and actual workplace requirements. For competitive examinations, candidates appearing for SSC, state public service commissions, or ITI entrance tests often come across questions on government skill development schemes where VEKs play a key role in delivery at the village and block level.
