Village Education Committee
Full Form of VEC
What is VEC?
The Village Education Committee, commonly abbreviated as VEC, is a locally elected body of parents, community members, and educators who oversee the functioning of government and government-aided schools at the village level across India. The committee was formalised under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan framework and later strengthened through the Right to Education Act, 2009, which mandated the formation of school-level monitoring bodies in every village. The VEC plays a vital role in ensuring regular attendance of students, monitoring the mid-day meal scheme, supervising teacher availability, and addressing infrastructure gaps such as classrooms, toilets, drinking water, and boundary walls. It also acts as a bridge between the school administration and the local panchayat, raising community concerns and mobilising resources for quality improvement. In several states, VEC members receive training on child rights, inclusive education, and learning outcomes. The committee is particularly important in rural and tribal areas where it has helped reduce dropout rates and improve enrolment of girls and marginalised groups. Questions on VEC frequently appear in CTET, State TET, UGC NET, and various state public service commission examinations dealing with Indian education policy.
